Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Kulin.
Jacob, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was an art major at Skidmore College, 1995. Went on to receive a master’s in metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art, 1999. Moved back to Boston after mymaster’s degree. Focused on sculpture with gallery representation in Boston from 2002 – 2006. Then went out on my own as a working artist (independent without representation) and found a number of corporate opportunities involving wall sculpture and furniture. Over the years became more involved with the design / architectural scene in Boston.
In 2010, I was given my first public sculpture opportunity with the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. This project then led to further public art projects in and out of state. My latest public sculpture was completed and installed in 2016 for friends of Symphony Community Park in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston.
Today, I continue working on / collaborating with art collectors, designers and architects involving projects that call for creative thinking and fabrication for the private, corporate and public sector.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t call what I do smooth sailing, more like peaks and valleys. One year can be great the next not so great. Instead of highs coupled with lows, it would be nice to find some middle ground or rolling hills, if you will. Don’t get me wrong, being on a peak is awesome but getting through some of the long valleys can be incredible if not almost impossible challenge. So, I continue to believe in nothing ventured, nothing gained. The greater the risk, the greater the reward. I feel that I have deep understanding/appreciation for strong design and know how to properly implement my talents toward creating contemporary art and furniture…
Please tell us about Kulin Modern.
I have over 20 years of experience. I specialize in private, corporate and public sculpture and furniture (Indoor and outdoor).
I am most proud of recently completed public sculpture projects within the past five years. I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge and experience through collaborations with city agencies and development companies.
I believe what sets me apart from others is that I’m known for being a diversified artist who knows a great deal about design, architecture, engineering, fabrication and installation for various types of creative projects.
Recently completed works/projects have been well received, I hope to continue finding an opportunity to design, create, collaborate and build…
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I might have considered teaming up with another individual to jointly pursue various creative projects within the private, corporate and public realm.
